Use a helmet, check the bike for good brakes (disc brakes ftw), suspension and see if it isnt falling apart. Or go on holiday to france and buy a cheap one every year, thats what we do.

any of those makes will do a great bike at that price (i bought a trek a fair few years back for similar money and loved it)

in that price bracket you're major decision is front shock or rigid. rather than getting an entry level shock on an average frame i went for a rigid fork and a better frame/drivetrain. that way I had the option of adding a nice shock later but didn't have to worry about other upgrades.

DISCLAIMER i haven't used my bike in at least a year. it was originally bought for mucking about offroad and commuting, since i got a job out of town i don't use it so this info might be totally out of date

TBH I completely see why younger people have high insurance, one of my mates was in an accident the other day because all he does is speed and managed to drive into the side of another car. Another mate who has been driving a year and a half has so far driven sideways off the road and totalled his defender on a tree (completley rebuilt it in a week lol) and the other month was involved in another accident where he was driving at 2mph and a cyclist went full head on into him completely missing his full front nudge bar and smacking into the bonnet causing a massive dent :rolleyes:

Young people have alot of accidents and i'm just waiting for mine (had a few close calls lately)
